Armed conflicts in the world have caused us to currently face the worst migration crisis after the Second World War . Syria, South Sudan and the Central African Republic are some of the nerve centers of this situation, which every day throws thousands of people into forced exile. How many images tell us this every day? What for many is a choice, for others it is an obligation. Leaving their places of origin has become the last resort for millions of families to escape the war and aspire to a life in dignified conditions . Conflict-free countries have become the destination for many of them. So much so, that according to calculations by international organizations, if all the refugees in the world decided to unite to form the same country, it would be the 26th most populated on the planet with nearly 59 million inhabitants. Can you imagine the magnitude? universal-refugee values Syrian refugee camp on the outskirts of the city of Tripoli. 80% of Syria's refugees are not in the camps, but in neighborhoods where they have arrived in search of support from family or friends, in abandoned buildings and in improvised camps on the outskirts of cities.
There, the distribution of humanitarian aid becomes even more complicated since the supply of water and food, as well as hygienic and sanitary conditions, are at a minimum. © Pablo Tosco / Oxfam Intermón But the crisis does not only concern the countries from which people are fleeing. The dimension of the tragedy has revealed that we are no longer facing a regional or continental problem , but rather a global issue . Let's review some data that helps to see this emergency situation more clearly: As of July 2015, an estimated 4 million Albania Mobile Number List people of Syrian origin have fled fighting between the Islamic State and the country's security forces, most of them children, the elderly and women. The coasts of Turkey are the main destination for hundreds of refugees seeking political asylum and humanitarian assistance. In North Africa and Asia , countries such as Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq host the rest of the Syrian refugees who have crossed the border. According to estimates, the number of refugees who arrived on European shores in 2015 is 300,000 . However, these calculations do not include the thousands of people who have lost their lives in shipwrecks such as the one that occurred in mid-April off the coast of Lampedusa. Migration, a fundamental right The United Nations Organization (UN) recognizes migration as one of the fundamental rights of people .
Emphasizes the freedom of choice and movement when looking for a place of residence. The current migration crisis shows that this right is not fulfilled as it should . The vast majority of displaced people in the world would not leave their place of residence if the problems they were fleeing from did not exist there. Staying in the same place is as valid and respectable as freedom of movement. Who would consider otherwise? Europe is working on strategies to partially solve the current crisis. But the efforts so far are insufficient. The bulk of specialized organizations and institutions insist on specific measures such as: Work on a common asylum system that guarantees the reception of thousands of refugees in the member states. Implement humanitarian visas so that people can flee emergency situations. Increase aid to refugee camps that already exist in places like Jordan or Lebanon, among others. Stop xenophobia with educational initiatives . This will guarantee a better welcome for people arriving in Europe. Remember that, on an individual level, you can participate in one of the various campaigns and actions that are being carried out by both private initiatives and NGOs, such as the one we have been carrying out for years at Oxfam Intermón . Do you know her? Because not everyone is lucky enough to be born in a place without violence, from here we have the opportunity to contribute to paving the way for refugees around the world who are looking for a place to live in peace.
